I wanted to do a portrait to polish my skills a bit. I'm happy with how it came out, I think its my best portrait yet. c: Used color pencils, been half a year since I attempted them so was a bit rusty. Surprised I didn't screw up horribly. Full size looks better.

Very nice, I love the detail in the skin and the shirt. I would say that you could afford to go a bit darker below the chin on the neck I mean. You can add more shadows to the folds of the shirt to make it seem a little less flat. You could also try to add some white highlights to the eyes and lips, I know that its hard to do this with coloured pencils, but if you have a white gel pen or a thin brush and some acrylic paints, you could easily achieve the same effect :)

You can tell that you've put a whole lot of effort into this portrait. I can see a bit of emotion, a bit of surprise, in this one. I like the face shape, especially around the chin and jaw like as it feels really smooth. The area around the the eyes and nose feel very defined, like you've put the most time into them, especially the section between the eyes. It has a lot of depth right there and throughout most of the nose.

Critically, the eyes feel a little large in comparison to the rest of the face, but I think that is more due to the fact of how white they are. It might be beneficial to give them a bit more shading as well as eyes are never completely white. I've found this tutorial to be a bit helpful and think that you might also be interested in checking it out. [link] It's just an eye tutorial by another deviant. It might also give you more of an idea on how to work with eyelashes. I think that your portrait could use some variety in that eyelashes are usually more unpredictable and less evenly spaced (unless they're the fancy fake ones people like to wear to parties ;) ).

The mouth seems to be a little flat as well. I think it could use a bit more shading. The upper lip typically is a little bit darker than the lower one just because of its angle. For plumper lips, you might try doing more shading in the corners to give them a bit more of a pouty look. You might also consider making some shine on the lower lips with just little dabs of lighter colors. Here's a bit of an example for you from another deviant. [link] It's a little hard to read because it's kind of small, but it will give you some idea of another artist's method that you might find helpful.

I'm always a big proponent of learning other people's methods of doing art just in the case that it might help me to improve my own process. In the spirit of sharing, I've found some color pencil portrait tutorials so you can see some other deviants' processes that might be helpful in your own. [link] [link]

But based upon this piece, you're really improving. You should be really proud of what you've accomplished and I can really see your efforts. It's a pretty piece and it's showing some good depth and some good techniques. I think you can really take it somewhere with a few good references and some practice. Keep up the good work and thanks for showing us your art! =D

There's some really good facial anatomy here! The nose is especially well made, since that part is usually super difficult. Well done!

Your coloring lacks a little, though. Right now her skin looks a bit too (as already commented) monotone, yellow, which actually makes it look kind of like wax. If your want lifelike skin it's all about starting super light using a pink or a warm orange and then working your way through darker pink, orange, different browns, a bit of red for cheeks, and even some cold blues for shading. Trust me, it'll do wonders!
(The shading itself around the eyes works really well, though!)

The same goes for hair. Hues! More hues always!

But did I mention this really is a lovely piece?

Thank you. c:

The funny thing about this picture is it is significantly less yellow in person. :lol: As I already mentioned, my camera sucks.

I was using peach, light brown, brown, dark blue, white, and pink for the skin. :P Maybe I should work with different amounts of each though. I only have a 24 color pencil set at the moment since you know, Derwent colorsoft and Prisma color pencils cost a ton. ^^;

I think I was only using black for the hair. :P

I appreciate the detailed feedback. c:

Oh, you're welcome. I know how cameras can be horrible representations. I haven't got any 'fancy' color pencils myself. But hey, we make do, right? ^^

Looks pretty good!

I think you could use a little more enhancement on the shading; she's a bit mono-tonal. It would help if there were some deeper shadows around her eyes and jaw. Also, I think it would help if you added some more detail and strands to her hair.
